WHY YOU NEED PASSION AND PURPOSE IN YOUR CAREER

16/01/2017
Why you need passion and purpose in your career

As an established staffing organization with over 30 years of experience, we are aware of the huge impact our people working in recruitment have on their candidates. They support them in finding new career opportunities helping them build a successful and fulfilled working life.

Someone who knows about this impact just too well is Lauren Glazin, our East Coast Sales Trainer based in New York. She works with employees from their first day teaching valuable skillsets to help them thrive and coaches our more senior staff in a variety of important areas, including management and team building techniques.

We asked Lauren why it’s so important to feel passionate about your job and why she and her colleagues working in recruitment have a career with purpose.

Tell us a bit about your career moves so far.

Lauren Glazin Lauren Glazin: “A career with a purpose means waking up every morning excited to go to work because you feel like you are making a difference.”

“I started my career with the company in London as a recruiter for SThree brand Huxley and then joined our Talent Acquisition team focusing on attracting new people to join our internal teams.”

“One of my ultimate personal ambitions was to live and work in the United States. A non-profit organization offered me the opportunity to relocate to Pittsburgh and serve as their Director.”

“Although I had moved on to a new role, it was really important to me to maintain a close relationship with my SThree colleagues. After two years away, a new opportunity opened up at SThree’s US division Specialist Staffing Group and I started there as a Sales Trainer; I haven’t looked back since.”

What does a career with purpose mean to you?

“A career with a purpose means waking up every morning excited to go to work because you feel like you are making a difference. Someone will feel their career has a purpose when at the end of the day they are fulfilled and satisfied with what they have accomplished.”

Do you feel your career has purpose?

“Yes! As a trainer I get to develop individual’s knowledge of the recruiting industry. I have an impact on people’s specific goals, influence their growth, and help them become successful in their career. Giving back and helping people is the highest form of self-fulfilment and the best way to feel you have a purpose.”

“I’m also actively involved in the company’s CSR programs and am very passionate about our corporate CSR vision of ‘transforming lives through skills and work.”

“I am one of the CSR Champions in the US. I oversee all the CSR projects in New York. I have organized a lot of fundraisers in our New York Office, including bake sales, the Auction of Promises, and the Thanksgiving Food Drive.”

“Being part of our CSR activities means a lot to me and creates an additional sense of purpose.”

What is the motivation behind you hard work?

“I am personally very passionate about giving back. I am involved in a lot of non-profit organization outside work, and like to incorporate this into my career also.”

How does recruitment and the people who work in recruitment impact others?

“Well, our candidates put their careers in our hands, they trust us! Someone’s career impacts their whole life as people spend 75% of their life at work. Therefore, trusting someone to find you a new career path is an extremely big deal and is taken very seriously by our recruiters.”

How important is it for people to feel passionate about what they do at work on a daily basis?

“Very! If you are not passionate about what you do, you are just doing a job. However, if you are passionate about what you do, you will enjoy it and feel valued therefore you have a purpose to go into work each day. People are wired to have a purpose.”

What is your favorite story about helping someone with their career, either as a trainer or a recruiter?

“I was coaching a girl here in the New York office and she was very upset and confused about the job. I had a few long conversations with her about her attitude towards the job and how she feels about being a recruiter. I helped her adjust her attitude and simplify her approach, now she is an extremely successful recruiter.”
