From an international flair to the low cost of living, Houston has a lot to offer. Some even refer to it as the greatest city in the United States. But why?
Located in Southeast Texas near the Gulf of Mexico, Houston is the fourth-most populous city in the US thriving with a flourishing restaurant scene and only a short distance away from stunning beaches.
Partly as a result of its size, Houston is a city consisting of tons of micro cultures, each neighborhood is completely different from the other and there’s a place for every type of person and lifestyle. Throw in the bustling art and music scene, unique culture and great weather and it’s an amazing place to be.
We asked our team in Houston, who are working for Specialist Staffing Group, the US division of SThree plc, and its various recruitment brands, what’s it really like to live there and what’s their personal favorite thing about their city.
Elizabeth Verbeek, Business Development Manager, Computer Futures
“Quite a few people ask me why, of all the offices we have in the US, I would choose Houston. Well, I will never regret that choice. With a young family, Houston offers a fantastic quality of life and really is a place that offers EVERYTHING!
“Aside from the fact that the people I work with are really like a second family, I’m lucky to be part of a diverse and international team of like-minded ambitious people who turn every day into a learning experience.”
Matthew Forshaw, Principal Sales Consultant, Progressive Global Energy
“Before I moved to Houston I thought it was all Ten Gallon Hats, line dancing, cowboys and men wearing boot cut jeans and plaid shorts sitting and listening to songs about how their dogs died in the rain. Houston is all of those things and so much more.
“Houston contains every cliché you can think of, it’s big, brash, everyone drives a huge truck and has a tattoo of Garth Brooks. Houston is also home to one of the most diverse populations in the nation, its international industry bringing in people from all corners of the earth; they come for work and stay for the warmth of the people.
“If you want culture then Houston is home to one of the most renowned arts scenes outside of New York. If you like entertainment a little more lowbrow, than head to Little Woodrow’s and watch turtles racing. And who hasn’t dreamt about eating a giant turkey leg whilst watching a small child cling for dear life to a sheep (mutton busting) at the rodeo?”
Travis Speck, Associate Sales Consultant, Computer Futures
“I was born here in Houston and throughout my time here I always found myself gazing toward downtown thinking, I am going to work there one day!
“Once I heard about the opportunity from our Talent Acquisition Team the dream started to come together. Anytime you’re roaming around the downtown district of Houston, you see the drive in everyone to make it big! The Wall Street of the South is what I like to call it.
“Now here at Specialist Staffing Group, working for our specialist recruitment brand Computer Futures you will find me walking to the office in the downtown streets with the largest smile on my face knowing I found where I belong and knowing I'm ready to make a name for myself here.”
