Ensuring our people have a career with no limits is one of our main priorities at SThree. We spoke with Jing How Koh, Senior Recruitment Consultant in Singapore, to discover how the training and guidance he’s received has helped his career progression.
Why did you choose a career in recruitment?
I wanted to try out a career in sales, just to see how well I’d do in it. I thought I would enjoy the people facing part of the role, speaking to different people daily is very intriguing.
Why did you choose SThree?
I had a friend who already worked for the company – he mentioned that it was a rewarding role. I was also interested in SThree because it was a specialist role, dealing with the oil and gas industry.
Tell me about your progression within the company.
Although when I started, I was working in the oil and gas industry, I then moved into technology recruitment. This gave me the opportunity to learn another market which, although it was tough, was incredibly exciting. I’ve also been given the opportunity to mentor some younger colleagues which is very rewarding.
What training did you receive? What did you enjoy most about your training and why?
From the rookie training to IRBC, the organisation has been very supportive throughout my career. The highlight would definitely be the Certification in Management Essentials Programme (CMEP), where I get to meet fellow colleagues from the other offices and we all learn from each other.
How did SThree support you in your career progression?
I think the constant guidance and monthly maps are very helpful to measure the progress that I’m making. It’s also very helpful to have clear targets, so there’s no ambiguity about how I’m going to hit my promotion.
What inclusion and diversity initiatives are you aware of and why is it important that SThree as your employer is driving this topic?
IdentiFy is one of the key diversity initiatives that we’re driving. I think providing a platform to allow female colleagues to succeed is a key for any successful organisation. What I also appreciate is the support that the company gives for returning mothers.
Did SThree support you to achieve a healthy work/life balance and, if so, how?
I think our culture of working hard and smart is helpful, as it allows us to still have time outside of work to pursue our interests. Also we organise football and boot camp occasionally to work out together!
Are you involved in our mentoring programme, if so, do you think it has assisted with your progression? Or have you helped someone else with their progression?
Yes, I feel that my mentor provides a different view of what I’m doing in my business. As he’s a veteran in technology recruitment, he’s given me a lot of tips in various areas, from market segmentation to targets and client strategies.
