We spoke to Emily Coughtrie about her career in recruitment so far and what she really enjoys about working in SThree’s Bristol office.
Why did you choose a career in recruitment? Why did you choose SThree?
When I finished university I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do but knew I had a real interest in sales. I initially went to work for an estate agency but, after speaking to a friend of mine about her career in recruitment, I realised the career progression was much better. So I looked into it in more detail and interviewed with both my friend’s consultancy and SThree.
I chose SThree because they were really honest during the interview about what the job entailed. They also came across as being a very supportive team and had a fantastic training programme that involved classroom sessions with plenty of opportunities for role play as well as computer-based training.
How did SThree support you in your career progression?
I joined as a trainee in December 2015 and, within eight months, was promoted to Recruitment consultant. Then, after about a year, I decided that I’d like to move into internal recruitment.
It’s working out really well. As well as being part of the team in Bristol, I visit our offices in Birmingham to meet hiring managers and candidates face to face. This really helps me build good relationships, fully understand their requirements and the office environment so I can find the right candidates for them. We have another Talent Acquisition consultant who has just started in Manchester and he focuses on our Leeds and Manchester offices.
How do you achieve a healthy work/life balance?
SThree encourage all their employees to have a healthy work/life balance and offer most colleagues flexible working including working from home. Sometimes I do chose to work a much longer day in the office, for example when I’m securing or negotiating a placement. However, managers here do not expect 10-12 hour days to be the norm which can be the case in some other recruitment firms.
What do you love about working in Bristol?
I went to university here and I absolutely love working in our office which is centrally located and only five minutes away from Templemeads station.
Whether our consultants are working for Computer Futures or Huxley (two of our specialist brands), recruiting for permanent or contract roles, we are one big team and very supportive of each other. It’s just a great place to work.
