Through their connection with Junior Achievement, colleagues from our San Diego office recently held a career skills workshop.
Junior Achievement invited our colleagues Alice Miles, Melissa Parvis, Devin Elliot and Rick Meese to host two workshops with 35 students. These students are bright 15-16 year olds who are expected to be the first in their families to go on to college and have little guidance from those around them on how to do this. That’s where our workshop came in.
Alice explains “We kicked the session off with a few ice breakers. We introduced them to our purpose ‘to bring skilled people together to build the future’ and asked them to tell us what they aspire to be qualified for in the future. The workshop offered an introduction to LinkedIn, shared some useful tips and best practices on how to make the most out of a resume and how to give your best in an interview. A brave student even volunteered to be interviewed and was a great example to her peers of what confidence and some self-belief can achieve”.
Overall, the team kept the students engaged, interested and most importantly, they had them smiling and laughing throughout both sessions! Our volunteers walked away from the day feeling incredibly rewarded and are already in discussion to go back and host more sessions.
