At SThree, supporting people with their careers and giving them the training and skills they need to progress is essential to what we do. We’re passionate about providing a career with no limits, which also allows our people to have a healthy work/life balance. We spoke with Josh Hutchison, Recruitment Consultant at Computer Futures London, part of the SThree Group, to learn more about his experience.
Why did you choose a career in recruitment?
I moved to London to join an Estate Agency in West London. After two years I was managing a team but soon realised my income was dependant on others. I chose to move in to recruitment as it allowed me to use the sales experience I had gained, whilst working autonomously.
Why did you choose SThree?
SThree are one of the largest recruitment agencies in the world with an enormous presence in London. After going to a few interviews, it was apparent that their training was the best available and they had fixed plans in place to progress my career. I also had a look around the office during my interview and loved the atmosphere.
How did SThree support you in your career progression?
I’ve now been in the business for 12 months and have been promoted already. I’m in the top five billers in the office and progressing to top spot.
We have a monthly review with our manager to discuss our areas for improvement and what we’re doing well - the focus is to improve billings to achieve our personal goals. I would say it’s actually my colleagues that help a lot. We all focus on an individual market which avoids internal competition, so it means senior consultants are always happy to offer advice and training.
What training did you receive? What did you enjoy most about your training and why?
I sit next to my manager who has a wealth of knowledge so it allows me to constantly ask questions and he’s always available. We also have a brand trainer who is available whenever needed and books monthly sessions in with us, and there are weekly group sessions with the office business manager. On a monthly basis, we have Q&As with Top Billers in the UK which is always inspirational – it’s actually the training I enjoy the most.
What are you most passionate about in your job?
We have the ability to change people’s lives. Every placement we make can bring our candidates closer to their personal goals and elevates their careers. No two days are the same; some days I can be out of the office all day meeting all kinds of interesting and inspirational people, and the next I can be in the office on the phone which helps to keep me engaged.
What industry do you recruit for and how does this industry influence society and the way we live?
My industry is placing IT contractors in to Public Transport companies. It’s exciting to think that every placement we agree makes a different to the technology used on trains and buses and ultimately improves people’s commutes all around the UK.
