At Specialist Staffing Group, SThree's US division, we pride ourselves on our commitment to ensuring we understand our customers and provide them with the level of service they need to achieve their career goals and business objectives.
It’s important to us that our employees understand the impact they have on their customers’ lives and consequently deliver a great customer experience. An example of a true customer experience champion would be Victoria Day, an Associate Team Manager for Real Life Sciences, one of our four main recruitment brands in the US.
Victoria specializes in finding contract candidates new career opportunities in the pharmacovigilance space with pharmaceutical companies, biotechs, and CROs across the East Coast.
We asked Victoria about how she became a successful recruiter and what drives her desire to provide a fantastic service to our customers.
How does a recruiter have a career with purpose?
“Recruiters have the ability to change people’s lives. I think it’s important to always remember candidates are real people with real lives, they are not just a number,” says Victoria.
“Finding someone a new job means a huge change in their lives and can open doors for them on a personal and professional level. From a client perspective, connecting the right people in this life-changing industry can transform not only their business but also the way we all live.”
“That’s why I never talk a candidate into taking a job that might not be right for them. I want to place them in jobs they really want, where they can thrive and reach their goals. I’m determined to find out what they want to achieve, what drives them and why they are passionate about their industry.”
What do you like most about your job?
“I like the fact that I have gained so much knowledge in my markets; people regard me as an expert in what I do. I’m also very interested in my specialisms, areas like drug safety and pharmacovigilance."“I love working with my candidates. I care about them and try to guide them into successful careers. I believe that ‘what goes around comes around’ which is reflected in candidates returning to work with me and referring me to their friends and family.”
What is your secret to being a successful recruiter?
“I’m a good listener. I really get to know my candidates. I ask them what they do and what they want from their career. I don’t just look for buzzwords and offer them jobs based on that."
“I’m also a firm believer in honesty. It’s very important to me to be upfront with my candidates because they will find out the truth about the job eventually. As a recruiter it’s crucial to be truthful and focus on providing a great customer service. That way you won’t waste anyone’s time.”
What is the motivation behind your hard work?
“I work hard because I’m aware that I directly impact the lives of my candidates. I don’t want to let anyone down. If I promise a candidate a specific role, it’s my obligation to do everything in my power to help them get it."
“I also want to do a great job. When I started working in recruitment, I wasn’t sure that I would be good at it, but my career at Specialist Staffing Group has taught me that if you try your best at something you will succeed and reach your goals.”
What would you advise someone who’s looking for a career with purpose?
“A career with purpose is different for different people. It’s important to identify what you are passionate about and what you’re trying to achieve. Once you set your goals and motivations, you will be able to find your purpose, no matter if that’s helping people or being financially successful.”
What is your favorite story about helping someone with their career?
“Once I had a candidate who was a stay at home mom for twelve years. She wanted to re-enter the workforce and find a job in the pharmaceutical industry. However, most companies were looking for employees who didn’t have any gaps in their resumes.”
“I found a junior level job for her which gave her the opportunity to get back into the working world. It was a hugely rewarding experience and I was thrilled to help her,” concludes Victoria.
