The SThree Foundation has a mission to support bright young people from underprivileged backgrounds into the STEM industries. We spoke to Gemma Branney, Head of CSR about how we are expanding our Future Talent Programme and giving our employees an opportunity to get involved.
“Last year in London, we partnered with Generating Genius and launched our Future Talent Programme supporting 50 A-level students from underprivileged backgrounds to undertake STEM insight placements. Thanks to our employees and clients’ involvement, the programme was a great success and we are now expanding it to three other UK cities via a new partnership with the Social Mobility Foundation (SMF).
“SMF is a UK charity that supports high-achieving young people from low-income backgrounds into top universities and professions. Our Foundation and SMF agreed to support 30 A-level students from Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester for a week’s work experience at local STEM employers. In May, we helped deliver a career skills workshop to 40 young people in Birmingham, 10 of whom will go on to benefit from our STEM Insight Placements. Over the next three months we will deliver similar workshops in each city as well as in London.
“Over the next month we need to find STEM companies who share the same commitment to making a difference and addressing the future skills gap by attracting young talent into STEM. We asked our employees in Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester for their help. They spoke to their clients about our programme and hosting a placement. They explained what a great opportunity this would be to give them direct access to diverse talent as well as living up to their social mobility and CSR commitments. So far, we have secured 20 of the 30 placements and look forward to welcoming more clients on the programme.”
