Let’s be honest, every recruiter knows that recruitment comes with its fair share of challenges. What makes a great recruiter is having the ability to learn how to overcome objections, keep motivated and grow to meet the challenges you face, whatever they may be.
In March 2016, SThree’s Recruitment Consultants at our Sydney office had the privilege of meeting Australian adventurer, entrepreneur and motivational speaker Dr Geoff Wilson at one of our client events. After listening to Geoff’s motivational talk, they went away feeling energised and focused and with renewed spirit to overcome whatever obstacle came their way in both their personal and professional life.
Let’s take a look at some of Geoff’s truly inspirational adventures and see how we can apply the lessons they teach to the business world.
1. Succeeding in a hostile environment

Whether in nature or commerce, no matter how hostile the environment, you can emerge victorious; you just have to believe in yourself, prepare yourself and don’t be naive.
This is something Geoff knows only too well, he escaped pirates in West Sumatra racing his boat at 20 knots with his children on board to get away. He was part of the relief effort that helped after the 2004 Tsunami, and he was the first person to cross the Sahara desert by wind power alone. On top of that he holds the record for the fastest unsupported crossing of Antarctica, completing it in just 53 days.
This is a man who has truly lived and survived through the harshest of environments!
2. Enter into all you do with an “All in or not at all” approach
This way you will be prepared. The obstacles that might stop one person will strengthen another’s resolve to push through. The difference is the mental approach agreed upon at the outset. Be 100% committed to your plan, job, dream, environment, mission etc. Continue to dream and visualise ceaselessly. It will stir the blood and protect you from apathy, depression and loss of focus.
3. Never, ever give up
Within any challenges that you face, make sure you keep your feet moving. This doesn’t mean keep on doing the same thing even if it’s not working, it means if you’re not getting the results you want, if you’re not breaking through, then change what you’re doing until you prevail.
4. Reassess, Revise and Repeat
Don’t ever stagnate. Once you have achieved, go back to the dream phase of the ‘All In’ approach and make a new plan. “It is always rocket fuel to do something for someone else - find a cause!." Keep yourself moving.
Geoff brings his zest for life and his passion for adventure to every journey he takes. As a successful business owner and entrepreneur, Geoff’s advice can support you to overcome any challenges you face in the business world, allowing you to thrive and succeed moving forward.
