Noah Jeong joined Specialist Staffing Group, the US division of SThree, as a Marketing Research Intern in our New York office. Noah is also a student at New York University (NYU) and spoke to us recently about how he balanced both his college work and his responsibilities as an intern.
Striking a Balance
Noah admits that it took a lot of organization to stay on top of his work and keep up with his studies, and found that his manager was very supportive of both his education and career. “Although it does take a lot of responsibility to manage both school and a job at the same time, Specialist Staffing Group was very understanding and my manager always gave me time off when I needed to invest more time in school during midterms and finals,” says Noah.
Learning on the Job
Noah also benefited from training during his internship. In addition to working one-on-one with his manager for his first few weeks at the company, he attended group training sessions, delivered by our learning and development team. “Specialist Staffing Group has a group of trainers whose job is to train both new and existing employees so that they become successful assets to the company. Because the company has been around for over 30 years, you receive training from industry experts who train you for literally everything that you will come across throughout your job,” says Noah.
Another great benefit of working with Specialist Staffing Group is the atmosphere in the office, which encourages employees to develop and strive. “A great part about working here is the open door policy with senior management. All employees, no matter how junior, are encouraged to ask questions and seek help from anyone within the office,” says Noah.
Noah worked hard throughout his internship, and speaks about what was expected of him. “As an intern, I was never treated like I was the ‘new guy’, I was always seen and given the same opportunities as any other full-time employee. The director of my team made me realize I was crucial to the success of the brand and gave me a healthy combination of both encouragement and guidance.”
At Specialist Staffing Group, every employee is given the opportunity to succeed, and this success is rewarded and celebrated. This attitude is seen right through the company culture, and it’s something Noah has experienced in his short time. “It feels great to succeed in the company, mostly because everyone makes sure to acknowledge you when you've done something well. There is a genuine excitement and appreciation from other co-workers when you do accomplish something and the people on your left and right will help you to stay motivated and feel valued. You really feel like you’re all like a team and a family. When it was my birthday, my director even brought me a customized cake!””
Not only are his co-workers appreciative of the work Noah puts in, but Noah can celebrate the relationships that he is building with candidates and clients outside of the company, and loves helping them reach their own goals. “This job is all about helping others find their ideal job or helping clients fill roles with the perfect candidate, so when you do place candidates or fill roles, you share the joy with many different people, realizing that you were a pivotal factor in helping out others.””
What’s next for Noah?
Noah returns to NYU shortly to begin his Senior Year, and will continue to work with his team on a weekly basis. “I can honestly say that I couldn't have asked for a better internship experience. No matter what sort of career you end up pursuing, recruitment is going to teach you a set of skills that are going to be beneficial for any job you hold in the future. I think what often separates individuals within a large group is the person's ability to relate to different personalities and settings. Recruitment will really prepare you for this, but you probably won't be thinking about other careers for a while, once you start working for Specialist Staffing Group!””
