GIVING BACK TO THE INDUSTRY THAT SAVED ME – A CAREER WITH PURPOSE

01/11/2016
Giving back to the industry that saved me – A career with purpose

Our recruiters at SThree and our nine recruitment brands are true industry experts. They provide permanent and contract specialist staff to sectors including IT, Banking and Financial Services, Life Sciences, Energy and Engineering and are working with some of the most established companies across the STEM industries (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

They are the best in what they do because they are passionate about their industry and know it inside and out.

We asked Chris Carl, former Client Relationship Manager at Real Life Sciences, Frankfurt, about the experience that changed his life and why he’s so passionate about Life Sciences and supporting the talent pipeline for his industry.

At 19 I was finishing school and getting ready to do further studies. It was a night in October in 2007 and I was walking home and, as I crossed the street, my world shattered before me. I was hit by a car. The driver was moving so quickly and didn’t see me. It was a lucky night for me though because the driver of the car called the ambulance and saved my life. I was in a coma and for six months I remained in hospital. I had several broken bones, including a broken back bone and my left leg was almost completely paralysed.

Setting goals

The first year of recovery was difficult, I was in a wheelchair for 6 months and afterwards on crutches for most of it and learning the techniques challenged me every day. Just keeping positive was tough, I set myself goals to achieve and worked towards them. It’s the little things, like walking out of the hospital on my own two feet, not in a wheelchair that really encouraged me to keep moving forward. I was able to walk with one crutch after some time and as I continued to recover I started wearing a leg brace which allowed me to walk with some normality.

Thanks to advancements in technology and medical devices, my leg brace continued to improve along with my ability to walk unassisted. In 2012, after years of rehabilitation, I was able to walk completely free of crutches and now I can walk up to 20 kilometres a day thanks to my leg brace. I’m fortunate enough to have been able to take back my quality of life. I even recently went on a hike through the jungle in Thailand, it was exhausting but to this day it’s one of my proudest achievements. I walk every day and I’m eternally grateful for that.

The future is bright

This entire experience gave me a renewed perspective on life, my way of thinking, my actions and my career choices all changed after my accident. It laid a new pathway for me, when I went to decide my career I knew I wanted to give back to the industry that had supported my recovery.

This is how I came to work at Real Life Sciences, every day I’m supporting the talent pipeline for an industry that truly changes people’s lives. The businesses and professionals I work with develop the new technologies used to improve medical devices, like my leg brace, which people worldwide will benefit from in the future.

I’m proud to be part of the wider life sciences industry, and to be involved in some small way. Every day I’m inspired to make sure I find the best people for the organisations I work with, so that I can be proud of the difference I’m helping make.
