FROM RECRUITMENT TO SALES

From Recruitment to Sales

Valérie Bourlard shares her experience of moving roles here at SThree and how she made an internal move into a new function a reality.

How did I come up with the idea?

I began at SThree as a corporate recruiter eleven months ago, recruiting sales professionals for our different brands as well as for support services positions. Little by little, I was thinking how exciting a sales position could be, seeing my colleagues in sales working next to my desk, making deals and being excited about it.

Last summer, I was recruiting for a sales job for the opening of a Progressive office in Luxembourg when it clicked. I saw this opportunity as very interesting for my career evolution: being at the very start of an office opening that would grow up fast and possibly give me lots of progression and management opportunities for the future, moving to another country, and above all the possibility for me to take the next step in my career by adding sales competencies to my recruitment ones.

How did I get there?

Everything went very smoothly. I could talk to my manager about my desired career progression. She was very open about it, and even encouraged me. I gave my application to the recruiting managers. After a presentation in front of 5 people, I quickly received positive feedback.

Why is this kind of evolution beneficial for both the employee and the employer?

Clearly, internal mobility should be promoted in every company. It gives the opportunity to the employee to focus on a new challenge, to acquire new competencies without the fear of changing work environment, colleagues, company culture, habits.

The company, on the other hand, already knows what the employee’s strengths and weaknesses are and can target the missing competences, and train them properly.

Internal mobility certainly impacts staff retention, accepting that some employees don’t just want a vertical career path, but also a horizontal one, being able to explore other functions. By doing this, you give the employees the opportunity to develop themselves in your company and not in another one, and they're also grateful for the trust you give to them.
