Grace Tanner joined Specialist Staffing Group (the US division of SThree Plc) in 2015 working with our specialist brand Computer Futures. Having worked part-time throughout her undergraduate degree, she spoke to us about how she found the transition from juggling work and college to working full-time in an entry-level role.
A New Start
Grace moved to San Francisco in January 2015 to begin working with Specialist Staffing Group. “When I moved I didn't know anyone besides a close acquaintance in the company. At the beginning it wasn’t always smooth sailing, but I found it extremely rewarding to be surrounded by such motivated people who truly were there to support and see you succeed.”
Senior Consultant Grace Tanner, San Francisco
“When I was in college I always felt I was already in a full time job, because if I wasn’t in class I was working. However, I still found it initially difficult to adjust to a 8 to 5 job as physically I wasn’t used to sitting and staying concentrated on one task for so long!”
Teamwork
One of the things that helped Grace to really enjoy her new role were the people around her. “I am fortunate to have joined a team with coworkers of similar values and motivations. We all know what we need to do to be successful and really encourage one another to be the best and achieve what we set our minds to.”
Training
To give every new employee the best possible chance of success at Specialist Staffing Group, all new recruiters attend training sessions, ensuring they have the tools necessary to grow and develop.
“There is a training program all new members of our team go through; it’s essentially like going to class each morning learning the basics of the job and the skill sets you’ll need to be successful. It is really fun because you go through it with other new employees and get to apply what you learned in training out on the floor in the afternoons. As you grow with Specialist Staffing Group, you have the opportunity to join other training and development programs that are built to enhance your skills and progress to the next stage in your career.”
Personal Growth
In addition to training programs, there are always opportunities for personal growth at Specialist Staffing Group. “In this job you learn a lot about yourself and how to implement new skills. Every day you learn something new, and it’s a great feeling to not only grow in your career but on a personal level too. It’s extremely rewarding to see your business take off after working hard to achieve your goals. Once I built my relationships and created my network, that’s when the job became even more fun!”
Words of Advice
Having spent almost two years with Specialist Staffing Group, Grace has some final words of advice for anyone thinking of starting a career in the recruitment industry. “This job is what you make of it. If you are looking for a job that provides support, challenges you in your career, can make a difference to others and rewards you financially then this is an amazing opportunity.”
