What is a career with no limits? We spoke to Jason, Marion and Lauren to find out more about their own varying and individually unique experiences of working at SThree. From career progression to professional evolution – find out what working at SThree can offer you.
Support and adaptability – Jason’s story
Jason Anayiotos has spent almost his entire career at SThree, something that would not have been possible without the flexibility and support that SThree offers its employees.
Jason began working at SThree as a consultant in 2005 in the contract division of specialist brand JP Gray. After a year, his management team suggested a move into the permanent side.
Two years later, Jason’s sights were set on becoming a manager, but with no roles immediately available in his sector, Jason moved to another division to run a small team.
Quite a challenge
Jason readily admits that his time as manager wasn’t an easy ride. Difficult market conditions, and a skillset that was better aligned to other positions, meant that after a year, his career was on the move again.
However, far from being an issue, this represented another career progression opportunity. Jason explains: “In my case, that was a horizontal move to principal consultant. It was something that suited me better."
Growing his career
Jason felt that a key part of his future career growth was to move from the frontline recruiting environment into somewhere he could use the skills he had developed there. A maternity cover position came up as Operations Manager for the UK&I region, which ticked all the boxes that he was looking for:
“I didn’t want to leave the company,” he explains. “And here was something that was very much what I wanted to do: a role with exposure to senior management, more along lines of project management, focusing on the mechanics of a sales consultant and how their systems and processes could be improved. In my new role I had to build relationships and get buy in, just as I did as a principal consultant.
“SThree are very much about you as a person and what you want to do. If you show the willingness, the aptitude and the desire they will support you throughout. I’ve had the opportunity to go the sole billing route, the management route, and I’ve had the opportunity to learn new skills outside of sales.”
Starting the conversation - Marion’s story
In Jason’s first two moves, the conversations were initiated by his management team, but it can just as easily be the other way round. Marion Carvalho, Operations Sourcing Specialist, America at SThree’s US Division Specialist Staffing Group, initiated her own discussions.
On the cusp of being promoted to senior consultant, Marion realised that she wanted to investigate what other roles might be available to her. Initially, Marion approached senior female employees, asking for advice and wanting to hear their own stories of success:
“So many positive things came out of those conversations, I discovered that there were roles in other departments that I didn’t even know about. Now I needed to figure out what I actually want to do!”
In the end, a role as Operations Sourcing Specialist suited Marion’s experience, skills, and career objectives very well. The most exciting part, she says, is being able to make the job her own:
“The role is in my hands,” explains Marion. “I know if I have an idea I can incorporate this into the role. I was really interested in branching out to strategic projects and coming from a consultant perspective, I get where the managers are coming from and what their operational needs are.”
Coming back to SThree – Lauren’s story
Like many of our employees, Lauren Glazin, Sales Trainer at SThree, didn’t come from a strictly sales background. She was working in a non-profit organisation as a facilitator for focus groups. It was a job that needed excellent people skills, something that came in handy for her next role as a sales consultant for SThree brand Huxley Banking & Financial Services in London.
“I loved SThree and its brands from the second I walked through the door. I remember thinking how smart these people were and how well they understood how to do business,” says Lauren. “The training was amazing, you were able to learn something and do it practically and see how it worked an hour later!”
One of Lauren’s ultimate personal ambitions was to live and work in America. Whilst SThree does everything it can to support the careers of its employees, at this time, an opening simply wasn’t available. At the same time, Lauren was approached by a former colleague, and accepted a job offer to be the director of a non-profit in America.
“I loved SThree and I loved the people and the culture, I never really wanted to leave, but I really wanted to live in America and pursue that side of my life,” she explains. “In my new job I had to fundraise, manage a board of trustees, and work in a completely different mind-set which I think helps me in my role now,” she says. “I think I knew early on that I preferred the corporate to the non-profit and after two years I was looking to move on.”
Lauren reached out to a former colleague at SThree, and found a role within the global training department in the New York office. “I knew as soon as I walked in that I wanted to return to SThree; I felt like I had never left. The training role was perfect for me, I’m truly passionate about it.
“This job is exactly what I wanted and with a company that I love and people that motivate me. I’m very dedicated to the company and its worth and potential, and I’m very thankful that they saw potential in me to take on a different role.”
Since their latest job moves, neither Jason, Marion, nor Lauren’s careers have stood still. Jason has recently been promoted to Senior Sales Operation Manager and invited to sit in on and support the main UK&I Board, giving him the opportunity to offer his insights to top management.
Marion has welcomed the opportunity to travel in her new role, and has also become a mentor to others, dishing out advice and help the same way she received it. Lauren continues to make her job her own, implementing new training procedures and feeling that she is really making a difference to employees across the organisation.
