SThree Worldwide

Does SThree provide training for its new starters?

As an investor in people, SThree has designed one of the best training programmes in the industry. It helps shape the career progression of all our employees. From your first day, and throughout your career, you'll be supported with a development plan shaped to your specific requirements and objectives.

Whether you're in Sales or Support Services, our Learning & Development team's mission is the same - to develop skills, enhance talent and enable global growth.

Training Programme

How long does the traineeship take?

About six months. You have to do four placements (6 in Germany) as a trainee before you become a recruitment consultant. The training seminars are spread over the first year.

What earning potential should I realistically expect in my
first year?

The average across the group is between £30 and £40k by the end of the first year. Trainees usually make their first deal within three months. It normally takes about six months to really see a huge difference to your pay packet. Once you’ve built your pipeline, you should see a considerable increase.

Of course, some people earn more than this and others less. However, we feel this is a realistic target to aim for and it’s certainly achievable. It all depends on you and your performance. That's the beauty of working in a commission based role where earnings are based upon meritocracy. The faster you pick things up - the more you’ll earn.

Rewards and Benefits

What will I be doing as a trainee SThree recruitment
consultant?

When you join SThree as a trainee recruitment consultant, you'll be given your own business sector to work on, specialising in either permanent or contract recruitment.

Working specifically on your own technical market, you'll be able to show your entrepreneurial flair by treating it as your own 'mini business.' You’ll offer sound, knowledgeable advice to your clients and candidates, and ultimately you'll be responsible for your own success. Key duties include generating business through telesales, sourcing vacancies and developing existing accounts. This covers, after-sales feedback, discussing opportunities with job seekers, and creating online adverts.

It’s a demanding role, and most definitely not a typical 9-5 job. But then again, "typical" doesn't describe the rewards you can earn either!

The Role

What’s a typical day as a Trainee Recruitment
Consultant like?

Your day will always start with a set of targets, set by your manager. In the morning you will talk to companies, do cold and warm calling, collect feedback from interviews and arrange client meetings. In the afternoon you’ll focus on the candidate side of your role. You’ll post ads on the main job boards, contact candidates directly via various candidate databases, Xing and LinkedIn. You’ll also conduct telephone interviews with your candidates. Finally, you’ll have a team meeting to review your day. Click here to view a ‘day in the life’ of a consultant.

How do you decide which sector to place me in?

The managers will decide which sector or market to place you in based on the interviewing process, team-fit and any relevant experience.

What degree do I need to be a recruitment
consultant?

If you're applying to be a recruitment consultant we will accept degrees from all disciplines. However, applicants from a business, law or marketing background tend to be most successful. At SThree we view your degree as an example of your educational accomplishments, so, regardless of your discipline, the important factor for us is your achievement.

What technical knowledge do I need to be a
recruitment consultant?

As a consultant placing candidates in specialist roles, you do not need to be technically conversant in the skills and experience required for the vacancies you’re filling. However, in time, your knowledge will increase.

At SThree we’re looking for people who are ambitious and self-motivated as a large proportion of this role is telesales (selling the recruitment services or our company to clients). A naturally inquiring mind is also advantageous.

Do I get to work with existing customers or do
I have to build up a market from scratch?

Both are possible. We decide on an individual basis whether to give new consultants an existing market or let them build up a market themselves. The decision is based on previous experience, preference and market situation.

What are my career prospects with SThree?

SThree is a meritocratic company. We believe passionately in organic growth. This is demonstrated by the fact that all our brands' directors started as trainee consultants. A consultant's promotion is based on success and achievements within the workplace - not on the basis of who's been with us the longest. The trajectory of your career path with SThree is wholly in your hands.

Career Progression

What's the commission structure?

It's uncapped. There is no threshold and the more revenue you bring in, the higher your earnings generated by your commission will be. You will be given a more thorough explanation in person.

What backgrounds do the top billers have?

You could probably take a cross-section of the whole company and find that no two people have the same background. However, everybody shares a desire to do things the right way – never cutting corners or looking for the easy route. They are all very driven and have a desire to be the best in their market.

Our People

What’s the interview process like?

Once you’ve passed the telephone interview stage with one of our Internal Recruiters, it will depend on which of our recruitment company brands you then see. Throughout the entire process, you could see up to three of our brands. This allows you maximum exposure to the different cultures within the company and gives us a good idea as to where you may be best suited.

You’ll meet a variety of Managers at the first interview stage. Should you get through to the second round, you’ll either come back in for a half-day work trial as a Trainee Recruitment Consultant or you’ll come in to perform a presentation to the Managers and a Director.

Overall, the process can take up to six or seven hours over two days - per brand. We’re looking to make a solid investment in you so we need to be thorough.

Recruitment Process

How can I be prepared for the interview and how
can I make a good impression?

In this job you’ll speak with lots of successful business people, such as Directors, Project Managers, CFO’s and Purchase Managers. To make a good first impression, remember the phrase: "Dress to impress". Your attire should be professional and business like. For gentlemen this means wearing a suit and tie and being clean shaven. Ladies should wear a suit, a skirt or a dress they can sit comfortably in: your hair should be neat and tidy.

To prepare for the interview you should have a look at our website and our Facebook page. Have some questions for us lined up. Ask your recruiter for tips.

What skills and attributes do I need to possess to be a
suitable candidate?

To be a successful candidate you need to show ambition, good communication skills, resilience, team spirit and the ability to work to deadlines and targets.

What is the team environment like?

Our team culture is one of our main selling points. Although SThree is a meritocratic company with individual targets, there is a very strong team spirit. Team members describe the culture in the team as energetic, driven and lot of fun - during work hours and after. They share knowledge and celebrate success together.

Our Culture

Am I entitled to work anywhere in the world?

If you’re applying for a position at SThree, you must ensure you meet the relevant legal requirements to live and work in the city/country you’re applying to. SThree does not sponsor visa applicants.

What are the international career opportunities and how soon will I be able to take advantage of them?

Each year, SThree is opening about 10 new offices around the world. As an SThree employee you can be involved in this amazing growth and take part in the creation of a new office. You can also apply for any job open within our other offices so long as you correspond to the criteria of the vacancy.

Each application to move abroad internally is considered on a case by case basis. Usually you would be expected to have completed two years of service with SThree.

Is the recruitment role you are offering an HR position?

No! HR is involved in advising and guiding people once they’ve entered a company. Recruitment at SThree is focussed on getting the right people into the right company. It therefore has a very strong sales perspective.

The Role

What is the difference between SThree and a temp agency?

We focus on high level recruitment. This involves a more complex recruitment process and higher fees compared to a temp agency. We operate in niche markets and deliver our specialist knowledge very pro-actively to potential clients.
